Joe Basgier is a partner in the law firm of Bloomston & Basgier, LLC.  The firm concentrates its practice in the areas of criminal defense, white collar crime, civil rights litigation, and gaming law.

Mr. Basgier graduated with honors from James Madison University with degrees in Business and Psychology.  He graduated from the University of Alabama Law School and has been practicing law since.  After practicing briefly in Washington DC, Joe joined the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office in 2004.  While there, Mr. Basgier routinely prosecuted high profile, violent offenders including serial killer Steven Petric.  Joe concluded his time with the District Attorney’s Office as head of the Civil Litigation Division where he focused on investigating and prosecuting  illegal gambling operations.

After leaving the District Attorney’s Office Joe, along with his law partner Brett Bloomston, founded the law firm Bloomston & Basgier.  The firm is known for its successful defense of Gabe Watson in the so called “Australian Honeymoon” case, the Jody Byrd prosecution, and other high profile criminal matters.  The firm continues to vigorously litigate both criminal and civil matters.  Joe also continues to engage in the prosecution of criminal defendants as a Special Prosecutor for the City of Birmingham, and represents police officers in various legal matters as an attorney for the Police Benevolent Association. 

In addition to his career, Joe has remained active both in the legal community and the community at large.  He was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Leadership Society in 2008 and is a past member of the Birmingham Bar Foundation’s Executive Committee.  Mr. Basgier was also a member of the Birmingham Bar Association’s inaugural Future Leaders Forum and has served on the Birmingham Bar’s Executive Committee as well.  He has served as president of the Criminal Justice section of the Birmingham Bar Association, and currently serves on the prestigious Grievance Committee.  Mr. Basgier also currently serves as Board member for the YMCA.  He also continues to lecture on a variety of topics including criminal law, gaming law, law practice management, and ethics.

Joe has appeared on both local and national television, including being featured on NBC’s Dateline regarding the prosecution of Jody Byrd and various television specials relating to the Gabe Watson trial.  Additionally, Mr. Basgier has been featured numerous times as a commentator on the television show “The Attorneys.” He is frequently sought out by members of the media as a legal expert.  Mr. Basgier remains humbled by the recognition of his accomplishments by his peers.  In 2012 he received the Merit Award from the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.  He has been recognized by his peers in the Birmingham Magazine as a top criminal defense attorney.  In 2014, he was named by the national Trial Lawyers Association as a Top 100 Trial Attorney and as a member of the association’s  Top 40 Under 40.
