Birmingham Gaming Law Attorney

Skilled Alabama Gaming Litigation & Counsel

Charity bingo is an important fundraising tool for many nonprofits in multiple Alabama counties which have passed a constitutional amendment allowing it. For many patrons, an evening spent playing bingo is an enjoyable way to socialize and spend time with friends. It is a legal way for many nonprofits to fund charity or educational work.

The attorneys at Bloomston & Basgier recognize the importance of charity bingo in the community and the nonprofits which operate the games. The firm represents clients in litigation & consultation, including charities, bingo operators and municipalities interested in drafting charity bingo ordinances.

Attorney Joseph J. Basgier, III, has significant experience in gaming law. Before joining Bloomston & Basgier, he served as head of civil litigation in the Jefferson County District Attorney's office, including gambling litigation. Attorney Brett M. Bloomston has represented clients in gaming law cases and has extensive experience in gaming law, as well.

The firm has represented operators, manufacturers, and charities in the electronic gaming industry since 1998. Currently there is an intense legal and political battle raging over charity bingo. Governor Bob Riley established the statewide Task Force to Stop Illegal Gambling to uniformly enforce laws against illegal gambling in all 67 Alabama counties. The Task Force has consistently targeted slot machines, which it believes are illegal.

Aggressive Forfeiture Defense

Many clients come to the firm for forfeiture defense. The task force, along with the support of a lead prosecutor and state law enforcement officials, has begun raiding charity bingo halls across Alabama. Armed with a search warrant, they seize the electronic slot machines, as well as money earned by the charity.

The attorneys at the firm have had success in pursuing legal remedies against slot machine forfeiture or condemnation, including getting the money back. They have deep experience in gaming law, as well as complex litigation. Their goal in this type of case is to prove to the court that the machines were illegally seized by the government.

The lawyers at the firm also consult with nonprofit organizations and bingo hall operators who wish to set up business in an Alabama county, as well as the vendors who own the slot machines. They help cities and counties draft gaming law allowing charitable bingo.
